“Homework” of the day

Peter Wolff 2005 Silvaner Kabinett troken / Obereisenheimer Holl – Franken

A good buy at just $19.90 at the ongoing (ending soon) Carrefour wine fair at Suntec. In restaurants, this would cost several times more (although in Germany itself it’d probably cost just a few Euros). I read my wine encyclopedia and it says that Silvaner from the Franken region is seldom sold outside the immediate region (more than 80% consumed within a 150-mile radius), so this is considered rather rare, though not a very valuable and expensive wine.

It’s a good wine to go with Asian food in my opinion. Crisp acidity, nice long finish and very fruity-floral nose. Quite well-balanced, except for the hint of bitterness in the aftertaste. The terroir in Germany is especially good at producing fruity, floral and earthy aroma in whites.

I like the flask-shaped bottle. According to my encyclopedia again this is the traditional bottle shape for the Silvaner varietal in Germany.

According to the distributor (the manager himself was promoting the wine at the fair – a nice chap whose hometown is in Bordeaux), this is the first time they are working with Carrefour to sell their wine – they usually distribute to restaurants and via their own shop. And the wine would not be available in Carrefour after this fair, so better grab more by this Sunday!
