I went out during lunch today to walk around campus more and hopefully find another place where I can find affordable and appealing food. However, I was disappointed once again. I went to the Student Union Building where they had a university-run cafeteria there. There’s only A&W, Subway, Starbucks, pizza and Chinese food there. And it’s more expensive than at places run by private businesses.
I eventually bought some Krispy Kreme doughnuts that a student group was selling to raise funds for charity. Ugh. It wasn’t good at all. I seriously don’t know what’s the hype about Krispy Kreme. Donut Factory in
For a nice city like
It kinda sucks when I realize that these are all that I am able to afford for another 120 days here. Maybe I can save up to have a big meal somewhere every now and then, but the psychological factor plays a part – for example I don’t think I will want to pay $12 for a plate of Pad Thai noodles even if I have the strongest cravings for it. Or, $5 for roti prata.
I finally experienced snow today. It’s quite laughable actually. It was more like little tiny (like 2 mm or what) bits falling from the sky very randomly for a short time. There wasn’t even anything visible on the ground, and if one weren’t observant enough it can even be undetectable. Hah. I hope tomorrow we’ll get snow in higher quantity and frequency.
It’s rather cold today too. About 2 degrees Celsius. I did my laundry this morning and used the dryer for 2 hours but my clothes still weren’t dry. I gave up in the end and now my room is a mess with clothes hanging all over (I’m trying to dry them with the help of the heater in my room).
While preparing dinner I found a slug (don’t know whether its dead or alive) in a pack of fresh vegetables. I was already halfway through the pack when I found it. Urgh. Needless to say I threw away the remaining stuff. I’ll never buy pre-packaged veggies again.
My unit mates are quite average people I guess. I only wish they can turn their volumes lower when playing games, stop banging their doors late at night, and clear up the shit (literally) when they stain the toilet bowl. What’s with the banging of doors, I don’t understand. I always close it lightly, and it doesn’t take any more effort than banging it.

That’s too bad about the lack of food options… although maybe the unique places have yet to be discovered (hole in the wall?) and you may find them later.
Heh, Krispy Kreme… There’s a factory about 30 min from us, and cos of all the hype, I wanted to stop in and see. That fresh donut smell as soon as you step in drives donut lovers wild – they buy boxes at a time. Behind a glass display, you can see donuts being made: it starts with an itty bitty ring of dough, riding along on a conveyor belt… drops into a vat of grease, and reappears as a donut as we know it (!). Yeah… sober reminder of what it’s made of, lest the visitors should forget.
(Heard abt Donut Factory in Sg, I should check it out the next time I go home…)
Congrats on your first snow! Wonder if you’ll ever have the good fortune of experiencing this in Vancouver:

Ah well, cooking is really a hit and miss affair. These 2 days my cooking was much better than last week’s. I think mood plays a part in it… people tend to cook better when in a better mood.
I won’t be able to tell the difference between Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme – they are both lousy. Maybe its the American diet favouring sweet and savory stuff.
I heard last year they had 4 inches of snow and everything was closed for the day cos Vancouverites had no experience dealing with any snow more than an inch or two! I won’t mind that happening though… I’ve got enough food supplies to last a few days!
