Went for a 10 day trip to North Vietnam last month. Visited Hanoi, Sapa, Halong Bay, Hoa Lu and Tam Coc. The weather there was horribly hot and humid! On some days, temperature peaked at 36 degrees celcius. Humidity was nearly 100% most of the time. Should have visited at the end of the year instead when the temperature would be much cooler.
It was a generally OK trip, with a few days spent respectively trekking up in the mountains, exploring the city, and cruising on the river.
Costs there were extremely cheap compared to Singapore, with a beer at a roadside stall going for just 2,000 dong (~S$0.20), a bowl of noodles soup for 7,000 dong (~S$0.70) and a buffet lunch at a restaurant for just 45,000 dong (~S$4.50). Hotel rooms are usually less than S$20 with breakfast for 2 for budget choices.
However, it is a place that I wouldn’t go back to, because it is not outstanding enough in any way (other than cheap food and accomodation). The scenery was good in the mountains and on Halong Bay, but I’d seen much better stuff in China.
I’m too lazy to put up any pictures… resizing them and uploading is such a chore!
Anyway, I hope I will be able to go for my next major trip this year, to Tibet! I will try to save up for this planned trip, rather than rely on my savings. Can’t let my savings deplete so quickly.
